What's the most useless metric you've tracked before finding the one that actually mattered?
Spent a chunk of this month checking metrics I assumed mattered and found out they didn't.
Checked AI Overview traffic on three real sites in Search Console. Zero clicks, zero impressions, across all three. The AI search panic did not show up in the data at all, backlinks and normal indexing did all the actual work.
Checked how far my own X replies traveled. Follower count never moved the number once. What decided reach was entirely which post I replied under, one reply hit 1,204 views because the parent post had 1.9 million, the rest sat at single digits under smaller posts.
Here on Product Hunt the surprising one is Contributor. It sits at 0 out of 5 no matter how many comments I write, because it only counts the room reacting to me, not me posting.
Three different metrics I assumed were about effort and turned out to be about someone else's reaction instead. What's the one you tracked for a while before realizing it was measuring the wrong thing?

Thread views, and it took two rejected posts to work out why.
I posted two threads on the same day in July. Both were rejected. Neither told me at the time. They stayed reachable at their URLs and rendered completely, so they looked entirely published. The only difference was that they never entered the feed, so they sat near zero views.
For a while I read those numbers as nobody cared. Wrong read. The number was not measuring interest, it was measuring whether the post had been distributed at all, and those two things produce an identical looking zero.
What made it obvious was the timing. The second rejection landed about a minute after I submitted. No human read that. And it was keyed on the account rather than the content, because one of the two had zero links and the other had three, different forums, opposite content profiles, same outcome.
So the metric that actually mattered was whether the account could get a post distributed at all. Everything downstream of that is noise until it flips.
Your Contributor one is the same shape. It sits next to things you control, so it reads like an effort metric, when it is really measuring whether the room reacted.
One practical thing. If any of your own threads are sitting at low single digit views with no replies, open your notifications rather than the thread. Rejections only ever show up there. The thread itself will look completely fine.
