Howdy y’all! I’m a designer at Gowalla, and we’re thrilled to announce the new Gowalla is available today in the app store! It’s a social map and messenger all in one, and we hope it helps make it fun and easy to connect with your friends IRL: Add your favorite places to the map, check in when you go out, and find your crew in the real world. Speaking of the real world, we’ll be in Austin this weekend for SXSW. We’re hosting a gathering with our friends at Funsize on Monday, March 13. Details on social media. True story, Gowalla was instrumental in meeting my wife. I used it to plan our first dates and it really impressed her at the time. I hope it brings some of the original features back like the ability to leave designated messages to friends. :)

I was a happy Gowalla user the first time around. When it ended, I moved to 4sq, who promptly let their product stagnate for years. I hope the New Gowalla can bring back the easy fun of social location sharing. Good luck!

@andrew_rich Hoping with the public release of Gowalla, Foursquare will take notice and actually do something to revamp their stagnant platform since I've accumulated a decade of check-ins. But either way, I'm happy that Gowalla is here, and I get to experience it since I didn't get a chance to on the first time around!

Such a cool idea! Can you turn on and off sharing in the app easily? Just thinking what if I want to go somewhere I don't want others to see :D

@thedontgetrekt Right now all your checkins are shared with your friends. (that's why we make it very clear to not "friend" everyone, but carefully select the audience you're comfortable sharing your checkins with) Later we'll add the ability to set the privacy levels on a per-checkin base.
