I spent years watching small business owners obsess over Google rankings while something bigger crept up on them: when people ask ChatGPT or Perplexity "who should I hire", it just names someone. Most owners have no idea whether that name is theirs or a competitor's. The ones I scanned mostly weren't mentioned at all.
