Card or no card for free trials?

Quick poll for founders (and anyone who tests out new SaaS tools): do you ask for a credit card upfront, or let people straight in?

We went with requiring a card for kōdlo. The thinking was pretty simple: fewer signups overall, but higher intent—people actually kick the tires instead of bouncing after two minutes. Without a card, you get a flood of accounts that log in once and ghost.

But I’m genuinely torn here. A card wall definitely kills casual curiosity, especially when you're an unknown product. On the flip side, no-card trials often just give you vanity metrics that don't convert.

Two quick questions:

  1. As a user: Does an upfront card scare you off immediately, or depends on the tool/pricing?

  2. As a founder: What model did you pick, and if you ever switched, how did it hit your conversion numbers?

as a user a card wall on an unknown tool is an instant close for me. if you do switch id gate the card at the moment they hit real value, like first export or first synced deal, so the people who give it are already hooked and you still see where the ghosts drop off

totally agree, thanks for sharing this! Gating the card at the first moment of real value makes a lot of sense. I'm taking it straight into our next talk with my tech team.

I feel the same. I'm okay giving my card only if I see real value.

i usually prefer trying a tool without entering my card details first especially if it's something new. it finds it useful I don't mind paying. But I can se why founders want to filter out people who aren't serious. Have you noticed whether no card trials actually lead to fewer paid users?

not yet, we haven’t switched to no-card trials so far. But we’re actually working on it right now :)

I would argue no card wall.

As a user it is an instant turn off, as handing my credit card data is a big trust ticket that I won’t do for an unknown tool.

From a founder perspective, I am willing to get an influx of accounts and segment that in analytics with triggered events to get the actual number of signups. Then have an automated ghost account cleanup process that runs every 180 days to keep DB overhead low.

Even with the credit card requirement, we still offer a free trial, so users can sign up with their card and cancel the subscription right away to test the product with no risk. It seems that even this kind of trial creates a “credit card wall,” even though no actual charge is made. Personally, that came as a surprise to me.

Yeah that checks out, I would attribute that behavior to the “trust” component I mentioned.

valid point too, thanks!

good debate

from a user perspective if I donot know I need your tool today, a card wall makes me close the tab. people are super protective of their payment info due to too many bad experiences with hidden cancelation flows elsewhere.

If you do the card upfront thing but establish early trust, one thing that helps tremendously is putting We all email you 3 days before your trial ends, no surprise charges right next to the card input field. helps with anxiety so much

even while we work on the no-card trial, we can add that line next to the card field right away. Thanks for the practical tip!

This is a tough one! We've debated this as well, but for now, we don't require a card.

With our upcoming launch, we're actually trying something different. We're asking a few questions during onboarding so we can better understand what people are trying to accomplish and give them a more relevant experience.

During beta testing, we noticed those extra steps created some friction, and a few users dropped off. It's a tradeoff we're willing to explore, though, because we're more interested in helping people get real value than simply growing our signup numbers.

I'm curious, have you noticed better engagement or conversion rates since requiring a card, or mainly fewer signups?

we have onboarding process as well, and at the end ask about credit card with no charge for 7 days. Well its clear the approach should be changed. The only advantage - we definitely clean bots sign-up, as they filled all onboarding process and failed on check-out. It seems people skip onboarding process or pass it as fast as possible then a lot of them dont want to enter credit card.

Hiten's point about asking for the card at the first moment of real value feels right to me! An upfront card wall asks for trust before the product has earned any, especially for a tool people haven't heard of yet. Have you thought about letting people in without a card and asking for it when they hit their first real result, like a finished export? That way everyone who reaches that point has already seen what kōdlo does 🙂

I agree! We're already working on these changes. The only thing is that exports aren't really a big part of how kōdlo works, so we'll need to find a different "first real result" moment to ask for the card.

Honestly, if I’m trying a tool for the first time and it asks for my card before I’ve even seen what it does, there’s a good chance I’ll leave. Let me experience the product first, and I’ll be much more comfortable paying later.

For me, it also comes down to the pricing. If the tool is inexpensive and solves a problem I already have, I’m more willing to enter my details. If I’m still trying to figure out whether I even need it, a no-card trial wins every time.

 makes sense. Thanks for sharing!

I’ve abandoned trials before simply because I didn’t want another subscription to keep track of. It wasn’t even about the price. Removing that little bit of uncertainty would make me much more likely to give an unfamiliar product a fair chance.

seems like a lot of people feel the same, it’s more about “another subscription to track” than the price itself. Good to hear, it confirms we’re going the right way with the no-card trial :)

I think it depends who your customer is - for consumers I would say no wall, for b2b the credit card feels pretty standard to me. So for me as a user, when it's for me personally I just want to try it, if it is a tool I am considering for my business I don't mind putting in the business card.

high entropy comment is detected. Well I was driven the same logic based on my own experience. Credit card for b2b solution is more then ok , specifically for test and trial period. Well usually I don’t forget about these subscriptions because it’s not for fun but work. Well it seems majority of audience has another option about
