Why the best AI products feel less like tools and more like teammates

I've been thinking a lot about what separates AI products that people actually stick with from those they try once and forget. The pattern I keep noticing is that the ones that win aren't necessarily the most powerful — they're the ones that feel like they understand your context.

Think about it: most AI tools today are essentially fancy command lines. You give them an instruction, they spit out a result. But the products gaining real traction are the ones that remember what you care about, adapt to how you work, and meet you where you are emotionally — not just functionally.

This is something we think about constantly while building Murror. The future of AI isn't just about intelligence — it's about relationship. When an AI product can reflect back who you are, help you see yourself more clearly, and grow alongside you, that's when it stops being a tool and starts being a teammate.

This really hits home. I've been coding for over a decade, and the AI tool that surprised me most wasn't the smartest one — it was the one that remembered what I was working on.

When I use Claude Code to build my macOS app, the moment it stops feeling like a tool is when it says something like "based on the patterns in your codebase, you probably want this to follow your existing MVVM structure." It's not just executing instructions — it's understanding intent. That shift from "do what I say" to "understand what I mean" is exactly where the magic happens.

I think you're onto something about context being the differentiator. The AI products I've dropped are the ones that made me re-explain myself every session. The ones I've kept are the ones that feel like picking up a conversation, not starting from scratch.

The tricky part for builders though: that feeling of "teammate" requires a lot of trust from the user. And trust is earned slowly but lost instantly. One bad hallucination or one tone-deaf response, and it goes right back to feeling like a tool.

For me, the difference is how much effort I need to put in. If I have to constantly guide the tool, I lose interest. But when it starts anticipating what I need and adjusts to my style, it feels natural. That’s when I stop seeing it as a tool and more like support.

When you get used to some workflow and tools are a part of it, it is very difficult to give it up.

In marketing, there are particular effects dedicated to it: Like ownership (it is harder to give up of something you already own) and it is also partially a habit.
