Omni - On-demand itemized physical storage

by

Omni is building the future of ownership and changing the way people interact with the things they own. Today, that means building the best platform and experience for storing, sharing and renting out your unused belongings to others in your community, and discovering items you can access (and they have big plans ahead).

GENIUS. When will you be in New York? (Where we badly need you.)
Adam Dexter
@cindygallop Hopefully soon Cindy, hopefully soon ;) but in the meantime, keep your spare SF gear out here so you never have to travel with luggage!

The company is trying to build an on-demand warehouse for bags of items that users ask to be picked up. Omni will then unpack boxes or bags of items that it receives, itemizing every item and cataloging a high-resolution photo of it. Once items are in Omni’s database, users can withdraw them on two hours’ notice. The company charges $0.25 per item per month for items that weigh less than 25 pounds and fit within the form factor of a standard airline carry-on bag. Items larger than that cost $2 per item per month.

@kwdinc Thanks for posting us today! One thing I should mention, we'll take items up to 50 pounds. We can sometimes accommodate larger items, if people have something heavier than 50lbs, just contact our support at info@beomni.com

Tom, was there single moment where you were so overloaded with stuff that you knew you guys had to build this? If so - what were you collecting/hoarding?
Thomas McLeod
@markdaniel94 Mark... I have wayyyyy too many sneakers, and hats, and like old T-shirts that meant a lot, and I have 675sq feet of apartment with my wife. One day the whole thing just tipped into I need space for this, but I still want these things. Like I still want to see them, I guess I'm a bit of a collector, and I wanted a system that would both solve the front end problem of too little space, and my mental problem of still wanting to feel like I have it. Omni came out of a series of events and feelings like that.

I was lucky enough to tour the Omni facility in Dogpatch a month ago. I gotta say, the intake process and item processing fastidiousness alone is a worthy case study for any start-up. They are militantly dialed on access, analytics and content. A remarkable job. As Tom extends the vision to shared stuff, I think this will pay off in customer glee and enhanced margin for the business.

@frankba this is a great break down of some of the potential directions we're heading towards. Thanks!

Love what Thomas and his team are building. Rooting for them and waiting to try them in NYC!
Adam Dexter
@tomharari Thanks Tom - we're looking forward to the East Coast as well... ;)

Looks like a great service, but the pricing seems really, really low. Will it stay that way or is that a launch pricing scheme?
Adam Dexter
@albandum We aim to keep the service affordable whether you have one item or 400 items. Pickups will always be free and deliveries are currently free as a limited time launch promotion.
jamestodd
@albandum I think the price can be low because the math works. If warehouse space is $15/sqft/yr and item storage is $3 or $24 or $60/yr/item, the question simply becomes how high the shelves can be and how items are bundled (which Omni is more equipped to optimize with than you or I am with a storage unit. Delivery cost is covered by the delivery fee. To me, the real innovation is the item catalog. At the low Omni prices, it's a no-brainer to use them instead of storage units, who have prices at $25-$50/sqft/yr for an abyss.

@tmcleod3 @albandum I know a good thing when I see it. When is that Nashville launch going to be again?

Use cases this seems to be awesome for: • Seasonal clothing • Skiing / snow boarding supplies • Hiking and camping gear for longer trips
Adam Dexter
@cyrusradfar Thanks for the love!

Adam Dexter
@gise11e Awesome to hear :) Someday we hope!

Adam Dexter
@gmiinko Thanks!

Once you see your stuff itemized in the Omni app it's magical. Instead of storage being akin to banishing your belongings - it's more like cataloging them for future use! That's a huge difference. So excited to see this go live on the app store! :)
