Our Origin Story From University Research to Global Standard In 2013, at RWTH Aachen University in Germany, a research project called SteVe was born. The name—short for Steckdosenverwaltung (German for "socket administration")—was humble, but the vision was not. What started as academic research into EV charging infrastructure quickly grew into something much larger. As electric vehicles went from novelty to necessity, operators around the world discovered SteVe. They needed an OCPP server that was: Open — No vendor lock-in, no proprietary protocols Reliable — Production-ready for real charging networks Free — Accessible to researchers, startups, and enterprises alike SteVe delivered on all three. Over the next decade, it became the go-to choice for EV charging operators worldwide. After over a decade of maintaining SteVe, we saw a clear pattern: operators loved the openness and reliability, but many needed more.
