Fun fact: the Mac app is one of those most popular Topics on Product Hunt and over the past year, we’ve seen a lot of interest specifically in menu bar apps. So, my teammate, @DeVladinci, encouraged us to build one. The app is super simple, delivering popular products, games, books, and podcasts from your menu bar (see settings to control the firehose 😁). A subtle notification counter increments when new things are trending, surfacing posts at the top of the feed with a red dot. This isn’t the first Product Hunt Mac app — several people in the community have created different variations which is part of the inspiration for open sourcing the app so others can improve it with us. It’s on GitHub. Anyway, let us know what you think and major props to @DeVladinci and @sethbwilliams!

@rrhoover @devladinci @sethbwilliams Great. would love to have the ability to see the number of upvote more obvisouly (like on website). Clear gray is a little difficult to read

@rrhoover agree with this. I would seriously appreciate someone writing a tutorial walkthrough on making these apps with Swift.
Vlado
@tomfme yeah we decided to go pure swift on this one, and actually payed out very well.

@rrhoover @devladinci @sethbwilliams haha lucky for me you guys hunted this along with @vidzy. Wanna say thanks to someone? Send out beers and Philz coffees using Vidzy :)

Product Hunt launching on Product Hunt and leading on Product Hunt. How meta :)

Compared to building an Android app of PH, what KPI's were used to know that a Mac app is more relevant?
Ryan Hoover
@johntheoak although half of the PH community is outside the U.S., the majority of engagement and visits come from people on desktop, with a slight skew towards Mac. I'm eager to build an official Android but it requires a lot more effort than the few weeks spent building the Mac app. We're also refining and learning what people want in a mobile experience on iOS, which will inform the design of the Android app.

@rrhoover @johntheoak delightful is the word that comes to mind after using PH for mac. the way you & PH team maintain patience & focus on roadmap execution is a rare breed and has been fun to watch 🙌

Wow, awesome! How long did something like this take to build?
Ryan Hoover
@ow it took about two weeks to build the core functionality, followed by about another week of polishing, bug-fixing, and some smaller feature additions, like the "firehose control" in the settings.
Kyle Richey
@rrhoover @ow What's the "firehose control" setting? Is that the "Show unseen posts count in menu" one?
Ryan Hoover
@imakestrides @ow it's in settings:
Kyle Richey
@rrhoover Interesting! That's a really cool feature. Is it in v1.0.18? I'm not seeing it in settings (checked Settings and Advanced tab). Keep up the awesome work!
Justin Scheetz
@imakestrides @rrhoover Ditto, not seeing it in Settings.

@rrhoover @DeVladinci @DeVladinci Cool. PH is my default homepage, you're in my iPhone, you're in my Gmail Inbox & now you're in iMac menu bar. I just need PH under my pillow and I should be all set. 😎

The Product Hunt for Mac app. A helpful addition to the Product Hunt universe of native apps available. Congratulations on the launch!

I will have to try this. Downloading now 👀 🏃

Like the idea but not hanging from menu bar. Standalone please.
Ryan Hoover
@tomflemming thanks for checking it out. We felt the menu bar approach was a more lightweight, easier to use solution to a dock-dwelling app, but open to feedback!
Tom
@rrhoover perhaps just personal preference. Might work better as an option. I am not big on apps trying to get into my menu bar. Standalone would work better for me.

...So happy it's Open source. Just forked it!
