Relay - An extension that adds Discord-style chat to every website

by•
Relay is a browser extension that adds anonymous, live chat to every website, so you can chat with everyone else on the same site. Relay eliminates the gap between browsing the Internet and talking about it.

Great Product guys! I hope this really takes off. How do you address the privacy of the conversation on the website the user spends time on? I do agree with Rob Moore above that there needs to be a focus on the conversation addressing the user's concerns. But, overall a great idea guys!

@chandra_paritala Thank you! We try to store as little data as possible with regard to the user. We don't store anything tied to your user id as a result of visiting the site unless you send a message there (in which case we have to). If you use Firefox, we use no tracking. If you use anything else, you can toggle off tracking in the extension settings. You can read our whole privacy policy at https://relaychat.app/privacy

On the surface this is an amazing idea. I tried it and it works as intended and looks great. I’m just worried about the privacy implications of something like this. You are able to see all the websites visited by other users which makes it very easy to track people across websites. I see a potential monetization avenue in selling that information to advertiser but it’s feels very intrusive. A cool piece of tech but I think there should be more thought put into the privacy of users. It’s one of those things that sounds great on paper but in production has too much potential for abuse. I uninstalled it because of that.

@frankie_p1 sorry to hear you uninstalled. For what it’s worth, no other user will know you’ve visited a site unless you choose to post there. We also store as little personal information as possible (just the email address—which we don’t verify—and associated IP addresses). You can inspect the network traffic to verify exactly what we collect. I definitely understand your concern as far as the potential to track you across websites. This concern is shared across many extensions. If you’d like Relay to run on only specific websites, you can specify them in chrome://extensions. Also open to any feedback you have as far as making this product more private!

@amfraine Thanks Andrew!

So basically it's a copy of dissenter which came out 3ish years ago. Google removed it from the store for no good reason but sideloading is easy enough.

Selon que nous soyons Français ou Turc ou autre... J'imagine qu'on peut parler dans notre langue avec cet objet ?

Great work. Critical mass will be key for you too. Here are my ideas. Create a site categorization function via Alexa API amd present conversations on your site based per category. This raises awareness of sites and people who can help on certain topics, but may not be on particular site. In chat window, you could also dynamically expand the audience based on category hierarchy to always have chatters. Or point to other sites that are similar with active conversations. Best of luck!!
