Pet a dog to use social media — by Roots - the most wholesome app blocker on the internet

by
Our latest update forces you to pet your dog before you can scroll on social media. Turn a mindless habit into real world joy, and add a little friction to your doom scrolling. This isn’t just cute — it’s behavioral science meets emotional design.

Snap a picture of that pup while you are at it and get some content! Two birds and all that.

Very creative and I really like the angle you played on here before using apps. Congrats on a great launch!

Is this feature live? I downloaded the app (really liked it, great design and configs) but couldn’t find how to activate this. Was excited to try it out.

Pontus Wellgraf
@brasmussen Yeah it totally is! The way you activate this is to go into your settings of any block you have set up, then scroll down in the bottom section under ”Unblock friction” and select ”Pet a dog” there! Hope you enjoy it! 🙏

Behavioral tech meets digital wellbeing 🐕💻. The "pet-to-unlock" mechanism is genius:

- Positive reinforcement 🌟 -> Dopamine from pets > social media hits

- Friction design 🛑 -> Creates mindful usage pauses

- Biofeedback 💓 -> Possible stress-level detection via petting intensity

I can already picture it: you, phone in hand, about to fall down the TikTok rabbit hole. But before your thumb can betray you, your pup locks eyes with you—equal parts confusion and opportunity. For once, the algorithm is rooting for real-life connection, not just another endless feed.
