How do you find family offices that actually write startup checks?

Most family-office lists are a directory of wealth, not of people who write startup checks. A family office that only does real estate or late-stage PE will never reply to a pre-seed deck.

Before you send:

1. Do they write first checks into startups, or only follow-on / buyouts?

2. Check size and stage: pre-seed/angel vs $10m growth

3. Sector: they already own something in your world

4. A real way in. Cold PDF to a family office is usually a black hole

If you cannot find a recent startup check, they are not your investor. Matching is that filter.
