Is "Local-First" software making a comeback? Why we stopped linking bank accounts for budgeting.
For years, the gold standard in personal finance apps has been linking your bank account, storing data in the cloud, and paying $10/month for a subscription.
But lately, there seems to be a major shift. Many users are experiencing payday friction with traditional apps:
Privacy Concerns: Sharing bank credentials with third-party aggregators feels increasingly risky.
Over-Engineering: Having a simple payday budget turned into complex setups with forced account creation and endless ads.
Data Ownership: If a cloud service shuts down or changes its pricing, your entire history is locked in.
We decided to test a different approach: building a 100% offline, privacy-first mobile budget tracker (Jetpack Compose, native CSV/JSON export, zero cloud tracking).
The idea is simple: when payday hits, you assign hard limits to your categories in seconds without giving up any sensitive data.
I’d love to open a debate with the Product Hunt community:
Do you prefer automated bank-sync apps, or do you value 100% local data ownership?
What is your biggest frustration when managing money on payday?
(P.S. For anyone interested in testing a local-first offline workflow, I’ll drop the Google Play link to SmartBudgy v1.1.0 in the comments below!)
