The $20 Domain Trap: When “Launching” Is Just Procrastination

I noticed a pattern I kept repeating and I see it a lot with other makers too.

Late-night idea.
Instant domain purchase.
Quick dopamine hit.
Zero users.

Buying a domain feels like progress, but it often delays the one thing that actually matters early on: validation.

Once you own the “perfect” name, it becomes harder to pivot. You start protecting branding instead of testing the problem. In practice, it is much easier to change copy, audience, or value proposition when there is no emotional or financial attachment yet.

I wrote a short article breaking down:

  • Why domains create cognitive lock-in

  • How “productive procrastination” shows up in early-stage projects

  • A simple way to validate ideas without committing to a brand too early

Would love feedback from other makers here:
Do you usually buy the domain first, or only after you see real signal?

Happy to hear opposing views too.
