The complete AI visibility audit: How to check where your brand appears (and how to fix it)

byโ€ข

Yesterday I shared data from 50,000+ AI answers. Today I'm giving you the exact audit process we use at Rankfenderโ€”the same one we've run for 500+ brands.

Here's the hard truth: 78% of brands are completely invisible in AI answers. They spend thousands on SEO but never check if ChatGPT, Google SGE, or Perplexity actually mention them.

Don't be one of them.

This 30-minute audit will show you exactly where you standโ€”and exactly what to do next.

๐Ÿ“Š PART 1: Why This Matters Now

Before we start, understand the stakes:

Platform

Monthly Active Users

AI Answer Prevalence

ChatGPT

200M+

100% of conversations

Google

5B+ daily searches

37.8% have AI Overviews

Perplexity

15M+

100% AI-generated

Gemini

100M+

100% AI-generated

Total addressable "AI answers" daily: Billions.

If you're not in those answers, you don't exist.

๐Ÿ” PART 2: The Complete 30-Minute Audit

Step 1: Keyword Selection (5 minutes)

Choose 20 keywords to audit:

10 branded keywords:

  • Your company name

  • Your product names

  • Your founder/CEO name

  • Your flagship features

10 non-branded keywords:

  • "[Your category] best tools"

  • "[Your category] alternatives"

  • "How to [solve problem you solve]"

  • "[Your category] vs [competitor]"

  • "Top [your industry] solutions"

  • "[Your category] pricing"

  • "[Your category] reviews"

  • "Is [your category] worth it"

  • "Compare [your category] tools"

  • "[Your industry] trends 2026"

Pro tip: In Rankfender, go to your Keyword Dashboard and pull your top performing keywords directly. No need for other toolsโ€”everything you need is already in the platform. If you're just starting, use Rankfender's AI Keyword Discovery feature to generate the best keywords for your industry based on actual AI search data.

Step 2: ChatGPT Audit (8 minutes)

Open ChatGPT (use GPT-4 if you have it, otherwise GPT-3.5 works) and run each keyword.

Document for each query:

Field

What to record

Brand mentioned?

Yes / No

Position mentioned

1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.

Sentiment

Positive / Neutral / Negative

Context

What does it say about you?

Sources cited

Which websites is it pulling from?

Competitors mentioned

Who else shows up?

Accuracy

Is the information correct?

Example documentation:

Keyword: "best CRM for agencies"

  • Brand mentioned? Yes

  • Position: 2nd (after HubSpot)

  • Sentiment: Positive ("Rankfender offers excellent agency features")

  • Context: Mentioned in "features" section

  • Sources: Cited our comparison page

  • Competitors: HubSpot, Salesforce, Pipedrive

  • Accuracy: 100% correct

Take screenshots of everything. You'll need them for comparison later.

Step 3: Google SGE Audit (8 minutes)

Go to Google in incognito mode. Search each keyword and look for the AI Overview box (usually with a sparkle icon or diamond).

SGE behaves differently than ChatGPT:

SGE Characteristic

What it means for you

Updates daily

Fresh content matters more

Pulls from schema

Structured data is critical

Shows 2-4 sources

Being 1 of 4 is the goal

Prefers established domains

Authority matters

Document the same fields as Step 2, plus:

  • Position in carousel (if applicable)

  • Whether your schema markup is working

  • If Google pulls images from your site

Step 4: Perplexity Audit (5 minutes)

Perplexity is often overlooked but heavily influences other AI platforms.

What makes Perplexity different:

Perplexity Feature

Why it matters

Shows footnotes for every source

You can literally see if you're cited

More academic/professional tone

B2B brands perform well here

Longer-form answers

More opportunities for citations

Transparent about sources

Easy to verify accuracy

Document:

  • Are you in the footnotes?

  • How many times are you cited?

  • What specific content gets cited?

  • Is the information accurate?

Step 5: Gemini Audit (4 minutes)

Gemini (formerly Bard) is Google's flagship AI. It behaves differently than SGE.

Document:

  • Does Gemini mention you?

  • Is it pulling from recent content?

  • How detailed is the mention?

๐Ÿ“‹ PART 3: The Rankfender Scorecard

Use this scorecard to grade your AI visibility:

Category

Points

Your Score

Appear in ChatGPT (10+ keywords)

20

___/20

Appear in Google SGE (10+ keywords)

20

___/20

Appear in Perplexity (5+ keywords)

15

___/15

Appear in Gemini (5+ keywords)

15

___/15

Positive sentiment (>80% of mentions)

10

___/10

Accurate information (no errors)

10

___/10

Competitors outrank you (<30%)

10

___/10

Total: ___/100

Results:

  • 90-100: AI visibility leader. Maintain and monitor.

  • 70-89: Strong presence. Optimize further.

  • 50-69: Average. Significant room for improvement.

  • 30-49: Below average. You're losing ground.

  • 0-29: Critical. You're invisible in AI search.

๐Ÿšฉ PART 4: Red Flags to Watch For

During your audit, watch for these danger signs:

๐Ÿšฉ Red Flag #1: Outdated Information
Example: AI cites your 2023 pricing when you launched new plans in 2025.
Fix: Update website content, add "last updated" dates, publish new versions.

๐Ÿšฉ Red Flag #2: Negative Sentiment
Example: "Rankfender is expensive compared to alternatives."
Fix: Address the criticism publicly, update pricing pages with value props, create comparison content.

๐Ÿšฉ Red Flag #3: Competitors Only
Example: AI answers mention everyone except you.
Fix: Create comparison pages, build authority backlinks, publish more structured content.

๐Ÿšฉ Red Flag #4: Wrong Attribution
Example: AI credits a competitor for your feature.
Fix: Publish detailed feature explanations, add schema markup, get cited by authoritative sources.

๐Ÿšฉ Red Flag #5: No Sources
Example: AI answers with zero citations.
Fix: Nothingโ€”these are impossible to influence. Focus on queries with cited sources.

โœ… PART 5: The 7-Day Fix Plan

Based on your audit results, here's exactly what to do:

If you're invisible (score 0-49):

Day 1-2: Create 5 comparison pages (you vs top competitors)
Day 3-4: Add FAQ sections to your top 10 product pages
Day 5-6: Publish 3 data-driven articles with original statistics
Day 7: Update all old content with fresh information and dates

Why this works: AI loves comparisons, FAQs, and data. This combo covers 80% of what you need.

If you're inconsistent (score 50-79):

Day 1-2: Audit your schema markup (fix what's broken)
Day 3-4: Create content clusters around your winning keywords
Day 5-6: Build backlinks to pages that should be cited but aren't
Day 7: Update content that's generating negative sentiment

If you're winning (score 80-100):

Day 1-2: Monitor competitors stealing your visibility
Day 3-4: Double down on what's working (more comparison pages, more FAQs)
Day 5-6: Set up alerts for sentiment changes
Day 7: Plan expansion into new keywords

๐Ÿค” PART 6: Why Manual Auditing Isn't Enough

Here's the honest truth:

Manual audits are great for a one-time check. But AI answers change constantly.

What we see at Rankfender:

Timeframe

% of AI answers that change

Daily

15-20%

Weekly

40-50%

Monthly

70-80%

That means: If you audit today and check again in 30 days, 70-80% of answers will be different. New competitors appear. Sentiment shifts. You gain and lose citations constantly.

You can't do this manually.

๐Ÿš€ PART 7: How Rankfender Automates All of This

This is exactly why we built Rankfender.
