How a Look Becomes Fashion
Jenny Fenwick bought a lace dress from Mary Quant's Ginger Group range in Sheffield. The dress, dated 1964, originally had a hem that reached the knee. As skirt lengths rose during the decade, she shortened it herself. It now belongs to the V&A, which includes it in its history of the miniskirt.
The museum says surviving dresses from 1964 and 1965 with their original hemlines are now hard to find. Quant acknowledged the influence of young women dressing on London's streets. By 1965, newspaper reports were using the word "miniskirt."
Twiggy modeled Quant's designs, and singers including Cilla Black helped popularize them. In 1966, Quant wore one of her own jersey minidresses to Buckingham Palace to receive an OBE.

Preparing a Clothing Sample Brief

At the first fitting, fasten the cardigan and check the button band for gaps or twisting. Record where the hem sits as the wearer raises and lowers their arms. After washing and drying the sample according to the proposed care instructions, measure it again and note any change in the body, sleeves and button band.
