From Mandarin pronunciation practice to a multilingual AI coach: what’s new in TonePerfect
I first launched TonePerfect on February 18 with a focus on a problem I knew personally: learning Mandarin and struggling to understand what was wrong with my pronunciation.
Since then, the project has grown beyond Mandarin. I’ve added French, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, German, Russian, and English, alongside AI conversations that let you practise speaking more freely.
As I prepare for a new Product Hunt launch next week, here are five things that make TonePerfect worth trying:
1. Feedback that goes deeper than a single score
For Mandarin, TonePerfect breaks pronunciation down into tones, initials, finals, and clarity, helping you understand which part of a syllable needs work.
2. AI conversations to put practice into context
You can now have voice conversations with an AI coach and review your pronunciation afterward. It connects focused exercises with the challenge of speaking spontaneously.
3. Practice built around your weak spots
A placement assessment helps identify where to start, and targeted drills let you spend more time on the sounds you find difficult.
4. Freedom to practise what matters to you
Alongside structured exercises, you can bring your own text—whether that’s a sentence for an upcoming conversation or something you keep struggling to pronounce.
5. More languages to explore
What started as a tool for Mandarin learners now supports eight languages, making pronunciation practice accessible to a much wider group of learners.
My goal is to make speaking practice more useful: help you hear the problem, understand it, and try again with a clearer idea of what to change.
The updated TonePerfect is launching on Product Hunt next week. I’d love to hear your perspective: when practising a language, what do you find harder—pronouncing individual sounds or keeping your pronunciation clear during a conversation?
