How do you catalog your 1000+ private book collection?
I've got a book problem. The good kind — but still a problem.
My home library has grown to the point where I genuinely don't know what I own anymore. I've bought duplicates at bookstores. I've lent books out and forgotten to whom. And when someone asks "Have you read [title]?" I honestly can't remember.
I've tried a few approaches:
Spreadsheets — Started strong, abandoned after 50 books. Too tedious.
Goodreads — Manually searching and adding each book took forever. Got through maybe 200 before giving up.
LibraryThing — Better, but still slow. And the interface feels dated.
Taking photos of shelves — Can't search them. Just digital clutter now.
The dream would be something where I could just point my phone at a shelf and scan continuously — no tapping "confirm" after each book, no manual entry. Just scan, scan, scan until I'm done.
For those of you with large collections: What's actually worked for you?
- How long did it take to catalog everything?
- What tool/app/system do you use?
- Can you actually search it when you're at a bookstore?
Trying to finally solve this once and for all.
