WhatsApp has released an official app for Apple Watch

WhatsApp has released its official Apple Watch app, making it easier to manage messages without your phone.

Key features include:

  • Read full chats (including long messages)

  • Send and record voice messages

  • React with emoji

  • View images and stickers on the watch

  • See more of your chat history

  • Receive call notifications

All messages remain end-to-end encrypted.
The app works on Apple Watch Series 4 or newer, with watchOS 10+.

How many of you use a smartwatch daily?

I use mine daily. When it comes to dealing with messages i usually only respond on the watch if it is a message that can be answered with single word, otherwise i would just get my phone out. Always willing to try something new out though.

Nika

@alecsorenpedersenΒ Do you have Apple or any other brand?

Alec

@busmark_w_nikaΒ Apple Watch series 8. The main reason i wear it is for my epilepsy, heart rate and fall detection is really helpful if i have a seizure when i'm alone.

Nika

@alecsorenpedersenΒ  I think that for tracking health trackers it is good, tho I would be anxious to see those numbers on my wrist (e.g. if I wouldn't hit the daily quota) :D

Alec

@busmark_w_nikaΒ Do you think there are better health trackers out there that might be worth giving a shot?

It certainly has the limitation for messages beyond acknowledgement in writing 🀌🏻 But I like the voice message feature.
Nika

@nosheen_kanwalΒ It feels so futuristic :D

Nosheen Kanwal
@busmark_w_nika Positively yeah, having such tech hardcoded in small gadgets ;)
Nika

@nosheen_kanwalΒ Do you know what it reminds me? :D

Nosheen Kanwal
@busmark_w_nika enlighten me πŸ€”
Nika

@nosheen_kanwalΒ Don't you know this series? :O :D

No smartwatch here either, but being able to check (and reply!) on the go sounds tempting. On the other hand, I personally feel that smartwatches are over now. It was a trend where people wanted things on their wrist, but now it's a little - meh.

Nika

@sanskarixΒ I can imagine that on my wrist, it would last like 1 week and then would get damaged :D

Sanskar Yadav

So true 😭

Nika

@sanskarixΒ Especially when training with heavy weights :D

@busmark_w_nikaΒ By the way, I wonder how many people actually use smartwatches while working out... Whoop has built the entire brand around this as they've niched down, but what about others?

Khuzema Siam

Nice. I used to use a Garmin for a while and I always kept notifications turned off. I don’t use a smartwatch now, but even then I think having WhatsApp pop up on the wrist would feel a bit much for me. I already get distracted enough with the phone. Some people might like the convenience, but personally I prefer keeping a little distance from notifications.

Nika

@khuzema_siamΒ Same here. Interestingly, I do not use the phone so much. I am glued to my notebook :D

Finally! I’ve been using the Apple Watch daily for years, and this is the update I’ve been waiting for. It’s a huge improvement... before, we could only get basic notifications and barely reply. Listening to voice messages? Impossible until now!

Nika

@giulia_borghiΒ I can imagine that now, users will look like James Bond 007, talking to watch. πŸ˜‚

Giulia Borghi

@busmark_w_nikaΒ πŸ€£πŸ˜… exactly!

Nika

@giulia_borghiΒ TBH, I would look like Mr. Bean rather than James Bond :D

Giulia Borghi

@busmark_w_nika 🀣🀣 good one!

AkAsH

Not a fan of smart watches... already too many tech around.. I wanna keep my hand notifications free.

Nika

@akash_03Β Yup, it only distracts.

Abdul Rehman

Still waiting for the day I can fully leave my phone at home.

Nika

@abod_rehmanΒ That day (dream) happened.

Bailey Stelia

Interesting, i've never been a big fan of smartwatch either, even if I did, i think having WhatsApp notification on my wrist might be overwhelming, i think using phone for messaging is already enough. But I understand why some people would like it.

Nika

@bailey_steliaΒ For sure, I do not use notifications on my smartphone :D
