Why I built Cursor Critter turning your cursor into a fun companion

by

Hey Product Hunt I’m excited to share Cursor Critter, a little Chrome extension that turned into a joyful side-project and now something I can’t stop using.

The idea

We browse the web for hours a day zooming, reading, clicking and it always felt a little too… static. The cursor is functional, but also kind of lonely. One day, I caught myself moving the mouse aimlessly, thinking “what if my cursor had a little personality?”

That spark became the idea: what if your mouse pointer had a buddy, an animated creature that followed it, waved, hopped around, making browsing just a tiny bit more fun?

The build

  • I kicked things off by prototyping animated “companions” (a koala, a phantom, a buddy) and hooking them to mouse events so they’d follow the pointer with smooth motion.

  • I added modes: Chase Mode (they follow you), Corner Mode (they chill out when you’re focusing).

  • I added a “daily unlock” mechanic: you start with 3 companions free, and keep the extension active each day to unlock new ones (yes: surprise legendary dragon incoming!).

  • I made sure it wouldn’t slow your browser fun, lightweight, no data collection.

Why it matters

  • It’s not just gimmick: it’s micro-delight. When you’re in a long session of work, research or even doom-scrolling a little animated buddy can lighten the mood.

  • It’s personalization: you decide size, mode, companion.

  • It’s free & easy to install no heavy onboarding.

What’s next

  • More companions more personality: wizard, robot, underwater critter… you name it.

  • More modes & behaviour: maybe they react when you click something big, or they get curious if you idle.

  • Community feedback: I’d love to know what kinds of companions you want, what modes you’d toggle.

Thanks & Try It

If you want to give it a spin (and let me know what you think) here it is: Chrome Web Store link

Hope you enjoy the little companion as much as I enjoyed building them. Thanks for checking it out, looking forward to your feedback and maybe adding your favourite critter next!

Cheers
