Why most calorie apps fail (and what I did differently)
I’ve spent the last months building a calorie tracking app.
At first, I thought the problem was simple:
→ Help people track calories
→ They lose weight
But that’s not what happens.
Most people don’t fail because they lack information.
They fail because they can’t stay consistent.
And most calorie apps don’t solve that.
They give you:
Numbers
Charts
Macro breakdowns
But after a few days… people stop logging.
I started asking users why.
The most common answer wasn’t surprising, but it was important:
👉 “I know what to do… I just don’t stick to it.”
That’s when I realized:
This isn’t a knowledge problem.
It’s a behavior problem.
So instead of building just another tracker, I focused on something else:
👉 Accountability + simplicity
Here’s what I changed:
Logging food should be effortless
(photo, voice, or just describing your meal)Users should feel guided, not judged
(simple feedback instead of overwhelming stats)Most importantly:
👉 There should be a real human element
That’s why I introduced a program-based approach with daily support from a nutrition coach.
Not just “track your calories and good luck”…
But:
→ Someone reviews your day
→ Someone gives feedback
→ Someone keeps you consistent
Because consistency beats perfect macros every time.
I’m still early, still learning, but one thing is clear:
👉 Apps don’t change people.
👉 Systems + accountability do.
Curious how others here think about this
What do you feel most apps are missing when it comes to behavior change?
If anyone’s curious, this is what I’ve been building:

And the program (with coaching) I mentioned:

Would genuinely love feedback 🙏
