Will software turn into “just a piece of content”?

by

15–20 years ago, building software was almost impossible for most people.

You needed a huge team, serious funding, and months (or years) to get something functional out the door.

Over time, more people learned the skills. Then, in the last 3–4 years, AI dropped the bar completely.

Now, smaller teams, even solo, can build in weeks what once took entire companies.

But here’s the flip side: when something becomes that easy to produce, it often loses perceived value.

Could software soon be like writing a book? Not so long ago, it was a long, complex, exhausting process. Now, with AI, anyone can “write” one in hours.

Maybe software will follow the same path. Not a scarce, high-effort product, but something you spin up quickly to grab attention, test an idea, or feed a marketing funnel.

What do you think: will software shift from being the product to just another piece of content?👇

Software has been arguably just another piece of content for quite some time now. "There's an app for that." dates back to 2009. Companies were creating apps just because it was the in thing to do back then. Functionality and having an actual business need for an app were secondary considerations.

Yes, it can definitely seem that way. Considering that ChatGPT 5 can generate a whole website from a single prompt, I think the number of created products will increase, but the number of successful products won’t necessarily grow, because a strong marketing team is crucial. Moreover, trust is especially important for such products—if only a small number of people work in the company, it can create a sense of insecurity :/
