X tries to attract more publishers and offer $1M for the best January article

Today I read in the news that X is offering a $1 million prize to the author of the most popular long-form X Article published by January 30, 2026, as part of its push to grow long-form content on the platform.

Eligible articles must be original, at least 1,000 words, and winners will be judged mainly on Verified Home Timeline impressions. Only U.S.-based X Premium subscribers can participate.

The incentive is meant to attract creators (and journalists) to publish more in-depth content, which also helps train X’s AI (xAI) with richer data.

  • It’s a paradox. Twitter was always a platform for discovering news.

  • Then it pushed reporters away by downgrading posts that linked out to news publishers.

  • At the same time, Elon promoted “free speech” that, in practice, often suppressed opinions different from his own.

And now this is the “invitation” to bring everyone back.

Do you think the effort to win users back will be successful?

I’m a bit sceptical, both about the quality of the articles and about how the winners will be selected and evaluated.

But who knows, maybe this is your chance.

Highly doubtful Nika. Once trust is lost.....

Nika

@zolani_matebese I think as well. And limiting it only for US doesn't help so much.

It will certainly attract the attention, at least for a moment, of all the relevant creators. It won't make an immediate difference, but Elon will learn something from it and maybe achieve something from his next attempts.

@d_ferencha I am curious what the winner's article will be like.

I am highly skeptical it will work, and given that this is US based I'm afraid it will only increase engagement bait.

Elon has already retweeted one long form article. It went viral and I don't know if it will win the prize, but this is not inspiring confidence.

Nika

@build_with_aj Which one? Can you please share the link? The thing is that if that one is not related to some person close to Elon or something from his team to not give money to someone else :D

This one. The article did the rounds, it was super popular

Nika

@build_with_aj aaa, Dan Koe... well, he is quite well-known, has a big audience. Probably can with this round.

Hah, this feels like trying to lure cats back into the house with treats. Will it work? Maybe… but I have my doubts about how popular gets measured.

Nika

@abod_rehman IMO, it will not attract the former users back, only existing ones will contribute.
