We built And Chill to give you movie recommendations that beat your expectations. We wanted to go deeper about the reasons why you like movies and allow you to really express those reasons to us. And we wanted you to have fun! :)
So we designed an experience that we think requires just a small amount of effort, with the results being as relevant as it would be if you were getting a recommendation from a friend. By sending us a few messages per pick, here’s what we think you’ll see:
- Shorter periods of browsing times, less mindlessly scrolling through Netflix asking ‘What should I watch?’
- Clearer movie matches, where movies are recommended based on exactly what you’re looking for
- An intuitive movie recommendation experience. Say what you want or your movie preferences just as you’d like to say it. Get back a couple ultra-tailored picks

How long have you been at this and what's your favorite movie on Netflix?
@joshmuccio Thanks Josh! We've been working on this for several months now. Most recently we've been putting a lot of effort into Facebook Messenger, especially with how much they're emphasizing bots now!
Favorite movie right now on Netflix is Into The Wild. It's just really interesting to me despite some saying that it's pretty sparse. It's motivational, but there are some ethics (good/bad) in there that have driven some great discussion with people!
@martinsfp Cheers Martin! We agree with you :) Movie recs through conversational UI has so many advantages. We get to hear directly from you about what you're looking for, in your own words. It gives us an edge in personalizing for everyone!
💯!! So dope. Have been using for a while now and get great recommendations every single time. Netflix has replaced the time we used to spend watching commercial with time spent searching for what to watch, And Chill helps you get some of that time back. Does And Chill plan to incorporate movies that are showing in theaters?
@idislikebrian Cheers Brian, love it! Movies currently playing are a natural extension of what we do now, so it's probably in the cards for the future ;)

Yes, we're going to become more well versed with other on-demand streaming platforms! From there, who knows! Getting movie recs right is going to take much, much more dedication! It's a very complex thing to tackle so we will be studying it for a while!
@jacobbendicksen Hi Jacob! We're actually experimenting with a lot of different NLP & Machine Learning frameworks. Nothing in specific that we've exclusively chosen just yet.
Congrats on the launch. How are people enjoying the recommendations, do you get feedback on whether they liked the movies or not, and does this get factored into their (or others) recommendations?
@tdavidson Hey Taylor, thanks! People are really enjoying it! About 75% of our users say their picks are 'spot-on' so far :).
So far we look at user data in the aggregate and use insights from it to fuel new picks. Currently we've been asking for feedback when a user comes back for their next pick!

Have you guys considered plugging in with facebook (and thus getting the movies I like on facebook, along with my other interests), and using that to help predict movies for me? :)
@acohn24 Hey Aaron! That's a great suggestion, and it's something we have on the roadmap! We could certainly use that to supplement our recommendations.
But while it's very useful for us to know that you indicated that you liked a movie, we also want to get more reasons behind that 'Like'. I could 'Like' the same movie that you 'Like', but we could like it for totally different reasons. That's why we love that you can give us specifics about your movies directly :)
