Artists are founders but they don't leverage systems like traditional founder do. As an artist and founder, I want to help, so I made a notion workspace with resources to accommodate the natural behavior of artists so they can operate like founders.
Who am I?
As an artist, I’ve played hundreds of shows, been streamed millions of times, and heard my music on television. Then I got into the music-tech world and joined the founding team of a startup called Treble. We launched an app that got 30k downloads and hosted weekly events for 3 years in NYC that 10k+ people came to annually. Now I write songs, manage artists, and advise creators and companies I believe in. I also make websites, digital products, and explore my interests in productivity, web3, philosophy, and spirituality.
Why did I make Artist OS?
Over the past decade working on both sides of the industry, I’ve noticed a lot of similarities between artists and founders. Most artists don’t think of themselves as founders though because they know less about business. But they make products, distribute them to a market, and work with a variety of stakeholders and contractors along the way to grow their careers. They operate like traditional founders, they just don't use the same language or systems traditional founders do. But this is a symptom of the music industry at large. Knowledge is gate-kept and innovation isn't rewarded, it's a threat. Honestly most things get done over email and text and the systems music companies use are archaic. All that leads to more work spent on the same things and less time for everyone to grow and enjoy life. But since founders in other industries can leverage the best resources out there for their business, why can’t artist founders and their teams do the same thing?
That’s why I made Artist OS.
To help artists and teams work smart and grow fast. To ground the chaos. I'll be updating it in Notion with improvements monthly based on your feedback. It now includes the following sections:
- To Do’s - a weekly template to manage daily tasks
- Routine - a weekly habit tracker for things you want to do for yourself and your career
- Create - templates for organizing writing, audio, and visuals
- Business - templates for organizing budgets, agreements, and logins
- Contacts - template for organizing people you know or want to connect with. Includes a database I’ll update weekly that already has 100+ social profiles for music supervisors, a&r's, and other industry folks.
- Research - template for organizing inspiration and any link you come across that you don’t want to forget. Already includes 100+ links to tools, templates, platforms, content, and communities you should know about.
For the contacts and research databases, I also included a chrome extension that allows you to easily add people or links to each database in one click so you don’t have to do it manually.
Soooo that's it for now. Please share with artists or people you know that work in the music world. If you want to get updates on Artist OS and other things I’m working on, subscribe to my newsletter at www.nstar.substack.com and follow @usernamemicky on socials.
