Dear Crazy Ones... we believe it's time for a change. Many of the products we're using every day have been designed to take as much of our time and attention as possible. As a result, we're more anxious, distracted, and isolated than ever before. Attention Settings are a practical pathway for regulating these kinds of products. By giving you the option to opt-out of certain features or sections, you get to engage with these products on your terms. Facebook, by means of aggressive growth, became a public utility for our most fundamental human need: human connection. It is only appropriate then, to require Facebook to allow users to engage with that utility without having to sacrifice their time, agency, and mental health because of its addictive design. This is an interesting concept and I have mixed feelings about it. On the one hand, I can see how it would be beneficial for people to be better aware of engaging techniques. On the other hand, a possibility to opt out from those? That seems weird to me. It is as if Netflix, as an entertaining platform, would offer an option to show less entertaining content because you feel you are spending too much time on it. I hope people have enough willpower to determine for themselves whether they are spending too much time on something and act accordingly (self-imposing a limit, uninstalling the app, closing the account, etc.) without the need for a switch.

@marco_ancona2 there is indeed a blurry line between an occasional binge watch and an unhealthy entertainment addiction that one wants get rid off. Netflix isn’t incentivized to add Attention Settings, because addiction works in their favor (though it’s already possible to disable autoplay, which is great!). Regulation imposing these settings would be helpful for people who are already aware they’re easily seduced into watching more than originally intended. Attention Settings are a bit like telling a bartender in advance “if I come in drunk next time, please don’t serve me more alcohol”. It doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing situation, like your suggested “uninstall app” intervention.

This is a great idea! I love it. I would love it if you make a video and explain your concept in a visual media, that way it'll be easier to share it with people who prefer video over text.
