Greg here, CEO of Capbase. I helped our team create the Startup Equity Calculator. We wanted to fix a problem faced by a lot of new founders who sign up for Capbase. Capbase incorporates new startups, then gives them everything they need to deal with equity, compliance, and fundraising. But we noticed a lot of new users got hung up in the early stages of startup formation, when it was time to issue shares to their co-founders. Fair enough: Early-stage equity splits done carelessly can plant the seeds of resentment. And many startups fail because of founder squabbling, often over equity. It’s smart to be cautious. But we didn't want to see smart, driven founders get stuck in limbo because they couldn’t all reach consensus on a fair split. That’s where the Startup Equity Calculator comes in. It takes a granular approach to assessing each co-founder’s contributions, then lets you share a proposed split with your founding team. For our users, our hope is to take the anxiety out of equity splits. But even if you don’t use Capbase, we hope the Equity Split Calculator can help you in your startup journey. This is definitely a cool way to address the elephant in the room. It seems like a fair arbiter. But who vets the back end and the multipliers. Are they based on industry norms? Where is that data coming from?
