What's great
Built by a team that clearly hit the pain themselves first, native captions with an automatic fallback to transcription and a single structured response either way removes a whole branch of error handling you'd otherwise write yourself. Having JS/Python SDKs, an MCP server, and an n8n node out of the box instead of just a raw REST endpoint is a real time save if you're wiring this into an existing pipeline.
What needs improvement
There's no visible way yet to tell whether a given response came from native captions or the auto-transcription fallback, which matters a lot for anything beyond search/indexing where accuracy needs to be trusted. A confidence flag or source field on the response would make it much easier to decide when to trust the output as-is versus route it for review.
vs Alternatives
AssemblyAIAssemblyAI is a general speech-to-text platform you'd point at raw audio yourself. Capslane is scoped specifically to YouTube: give it a URL and it handles the caption-vs-transcription branch for you, which is a narrower but much faster path if YouTube is actually your source.

Thanks for the detailed feedback! Completed transcript responses already include a source field: "native" for captions retrieved from YouTube, or "generated" for Capslane’s audio transcription. But your feedback makes us think we could make that much clearer in our examples.
Your point about accuracy is also fair: native captions can themselves be auto-generated by YouTube, so provenance alone doesn’t guarantee accuracy. We don’t currently expose a confidence score. Distinguishing creator-provided captions from YouTube auto-captions would be a useful next improvement.
