Code for Real is a no-cost, ad-free tablet app that teaches students to code with drag and drop blocks. Students can go through one of the many tutorials and build working apps with step by step instructions, such as a virtual pet that they can feed, play with, and give it rest. Or they can create anything they want in our sandbox with our many templates that can help spark new ideas!
I built Code for Real for my 9-year old daughter. She loves math and is interested in attending a middle school in 2027 that has a computer math focus. To be accepted into the school, she needs to take an entrance exam that includes some programming knowledge. She has taken MIT Scratch after-school classes for the past couple years, but there is a big gap between Scratch and actual programming, so Code for Real was meant to help make that transition.
For those in NY, the school is Mark Twain and she wants to join their computer math program.
The virtual pet tutorial is a clever way to get kids hooked without realizing they're learning logic. Drag and drop blocks on a tablet feels like the right call for younger students.
@udell_bi Thank you! I tried to set it up so that kids could quickly see the fruits of their labor (the students picks the background and their pet only a few steps into the tutorial) and in the end, have something that they would be excited to show off.
