@UXAndrew It seems like these all fall into 2 distinct categories with different business models - 1) subscriptions that offer a more efficient and cost-effective method of getting the things you are already buying (Dollar Shave Club) and 2) novelty products that are rarely cost-effective or practical, but ideal for giving as it's as easy as buying a digital gift card with the perception of being much more personal.
BarkBox is another fascinating one because it seems to span both categories - you can justify it from the 'gifting' perspective yet the buyer still gets the enjoyment of receiving/opening the box every month.

My wife is an illustrator and animator and we were just talking about how to make a subscription service based on illustration/animation...if anyone is down for a side project and wants to brainstorm on that, let me know. Her work is nothing short of fantastic :-)
