The unofficial Figma Model Context Protocol(MCP) server is a missing link between your AI agent and the Figma design document. Now, AI agents can create, edit, and arrange your Figma design. You can use it together with ChatGPT, Claude Desktop, Cursor, or any other client that supports MCP. The project is free and open source. You don't need anything extra. You use Figma together with your LLM.

We work with the official Figma MCP server. And it works like a charm. But there is one problem: it is read-only. You can not ask an AI agent to change something in your design. It is just not possible because the official Figma MCP server has no tools for it.
That is why we decided to write a non-official Figma MCP server! It allows AI to edit your document. You can quickly scaffold prototypes, edit your documents, arrange design elements, remove mess, get inspiration, prepare different variants, and much more. You are limited only by your imagination and the capabilities of your LLM.
The project is free and open source. Try it and let us know what you think!

You can see it in action here:
Community Figma MCP server
If someone from the Figma team is reading it:
You can see that it is a popular and requested feature that is missing in Figma. Can you please approve my plugin https://www.figma.com/community/plugin/1572223324912824909/puppeteer ? It will drastically simplify the configuration of the Community Figma MCP server. Or at least give me a clear statement, which guidelines it doesn't follow, and why it will never be approved.....
P.S. Everyone can still use it, but the usage is not as convenient as it could be.
P.S. 2. If you are going to add these features to your MCP server, it is also fine. I am more than happy with it. I just want some certainty to understand why it was not approved.

@lea_yi Official Figma MCP server allows only reading from Figma files. Our Figma MCP server allows both reading from and writing to Figma files
@anton_tishchenko Great! Thanks for clarifying!

I’ve tried using AI with Figma before, but the read-only limit always killed the excitement. You can see the potential, but you can’t do anything with it. This feels like the missing step where AI actually becomes useful for designers. I'm curious how people are using it day to day.

@abod_rehman Please, try it and let us know about your feedback!

I’ve been waiting for something like this for a long time, congrats!
Curious about your experience with larger or more complex Figma projects, and also whether you’ve seen meaningful differences between LLMs (ChatGPT vs Claude Opus/Sonnet, Gemini, etc.) for this kind of work. Beyond prompts and instructions, do some models seem inherently better at handling structure, hierarchy, and naming consistency?

Great questions!
About project size: The larger project is - a bigger context is required. And the larger working context - a dumber LLM is. This is the same as with other usages of LLMs; we didn't invent anything about it. Once, AI agent decides to compress the context, it is a sign that the project is probably too big for this use case.
About LLM choice: All modern LLMs are quite good: Claude Opus/Sonnet, ChatGPT, Gemini, and even Grok!
My favorite is Claude Sonnet. Clause Opus is better in quality, but is more expensive. And I am not sure if Claude is the best or if I just get used to it and understand limits better.
