Save recipes you find online, tag them for organization, make shopping lists to send to Instacart, and then cook using our interactive instruction list! What delicious food will you cook up tonight?
Hey there hunters! 👋
I was inspired to make CookUp when my wife and I wanted to eat healthier and spend less on takeout - we started trying to meal prep but would frequently find ourselves exasperated.
There are lots of recipe apps, or even meal-prep apps and websites - but they are generally walled gardens, we had to choose from their plans or their recipe collection.
There is a seemingly endless number of websites and blog posts that have some great recipes - but they are inundated with ads, are inconvenient to save / process, and easy to lose in the search for the next week's meals.
We'd frequently find ourselves just making the simplest possible thing we could think of, eating it all week, hating meal prep - and then back to takeout & ordering for us.
I've been a software dev for over 10 years so I figured I'd take a crack at the problem, I made a simple mobile app where I could:
💾easily save & store recipes we found online
🔍search & tag those recipes
✅ build grocery lists
🛒send the grocery list to Instacart for delivery
I'm really excited to get feedback from the Product Hunt community, and I hope some of you may find this app helpful in your personal lives!

@gregkop why would you region lock an app that lets users save recipes from the web? I mean, what's the point?? :)
Excited to try this out. I cook at home a lot, and I'm always bookmarking recipes I find online in Pocket or Evernote. Would be much simpler to have one app to bookmark ingredients for recipes — and pull that out at the grocery.
Does it just work on mobile right now?

This is great! Really amazing how you parse the complicated structures of the recipe pages. I've yet to find an error, other than missing some groupings into steps (see https://www.allrecipes.com/recip... for an example).
Some "I wants":
• Some way to import whole collections of recipes from other "walled-garden" apps.
• Import of paper recipes.
• A little longer delay before a tag is deleted after a long press.
* A tighter, easier to control tag list (maybe a two-column checklist? or a separate page for tags?).
Where do all the recipes come from that I haven't added?
Really fantastic! Good luck staying away from takeout!
@smalper thanks for the thorough feedback Steven! really appreciate it.
for importing recipes from other apps, what would you think of a chrome extension that could find recipes in your bookmarks and pull them into CookUp? otherwise, how would you expect that import to work? definitely looking to solve that problem well
otherwise - CookUp 2.0 is in the works and will touch on a lot of the points above! I'll give you a shout once its available

@gregkop Well, I'm more of a Safari user, but that's sounds useful enough to switch to Chrome for recipes. But I was thinking more along the lines of direct import from FoodNetwork, Yummly, BigOven, etc.

@gregkop Sorry for the extreme delay; I didn't see your reply until now. For import I was thinking specifically of the Saves area in Foodnetwork or the Saved Recipes area of Yummly, where recipes are stored in user determined groupings. My thought was that CookUp would somehow tap into that database and hoover up all the links. (But what do I know?)
Thanks again!
@lakzhikag not at all, thank you so much for the kind words! Please let me know if you have any suggestions of how I can make CookUp work better for you or your blog readers 😊
Pros: Good idea in principle, love how it imports recipes from website by hitting share - really smart. Cool you can purchase ingredients too, instacart isn't UK friendly tho.
Cons: The UI feels rushed and not very slick. Could be worth getting a UI/UX designer involved to smarten/smoothen it up a bit. No place to discover recipes. Recipes are uneditable, could be worth adding an edit function.
Otherwise an interesting project. Best of luck
