Relying on oldly SMS and phone companies a the master lock for your accounts it's not a good idea. Depending on the technology used, gprs, 3G, 4G... , SMS can be sniffed — be aware that most phones will automatically fallback to an older technology if it can't maintain a connection in the newer one and an attacker can force that behavior using a selective frequency inhibitor — and sniff the both the request and the code.
Moreover the security most phone companies have in place to reissue a SIM card is quite low, if you know your target and you want his to cancel and reissue his SIM card it is usually pretty straight forward process.
@abetancort we hear you. I've mentioned this a few times on the thread, but it's just our starting point. We're eyeing other places to reach people for all the reasons you cite.

Facebook announced in f8 that they've been testing something like this. Instead of connecting with Facebook account, they will make it easier to log in with a code sent to telephone number.
