An idea struck while making up stories to my then 5-year-old son Kenny. What if I could create an interactive story where Dad and child are the main characters in the story? What if this story could become something BIGGER, like an experience-based, interactive reading experience between father & son or daughter?
It took me 6 years of grinding from 5-7am before my daytime business, but these questions and vision of such a product released last December. It is called "Arctic Land" and it's the first of many Dadnamics in Reading (DiR) books (a sub-brand of Dadnamics). The book plot itself is a cross between Indiana Jones and Narnia. But the catch or "invention" are the 38 interactive components and online experience that I'm developing.
It is designed to be read by Dad on their mobile device. I use blank lines and other innovative formats to prompt Dad to read his son/daughter into the book. This gives ownership to father and child. It truly becomes THEIR adventure. Then, I introduce the second innovation called DiR Interactive, which are 37 interactive elements throughout the reading experience which prompts the child to solve riddles, draw, build, and complete survival projects with Dad. I force the father and son/daughter to leave the book 37 times to do stuff together. The combination of these interactive, experience-based elements creates a complete father/son or father/daughter bonding experience. Plus, I've seen first-hand that it creates a hunger in kids to read other books.
Long term, I see an app to capture this interactive activity and record to a database so other father/child teams can compete or just keep track of each other for fun.
Currently, the book sells on Amazon with free downloadable PDFs (that's all I could afford for 6-year MVP, LOL). I am also currently building the Dadnamics Community at www.dadnamics.com, where I help Dads connect to their kids with fun and interactive ideas to do with their kids.
If you're a Dad, grab your 6-12-year-old and click on the Arctic Land book above. It brings up sample chapters that you can TRY out together... RIGHT NOW :) Have fun and beware of the Great Bear!
