Create infinite re-recordings from any existing video. Communicate with short videos, e.g. share a clip in a tweet or make an Instagram post. Without any specialized editing skills easily select only the parts of a video that best express your point-of-view.
👋 Hello Product Hunters,
My name's Joe Rosen @joro1, I'm the lead engineer on a small team at Stanford University that for almost two decades has been developing and supporting different iterations of a video research & analysis tool we call Diver.
• What is Diver?
— Patented* technology that allows users to easily share their point-of-view with any video.
— With Diver's "Guided-Noticing"** rectangle, users can selectively capture temporal (time) and spatial (space) video sub-clips called "dives".
• Why Diver?
— Communicate with short videos, e.g. share a clip in a tweet or make an Instagram post.
— Users often want to share just a portion of a video rather than the entire thing.
— Without any specialized editing skills, Diver users easily select only the temporal & spatial portions of a video that best express their POV.
• How does Diver work?
With Diver's pan & zoom "virtual camera" (see the "Guided-Noticing" rectangle**) users can create infinite re-recordings from any existing video. Diver's software app / service is comprised of these main features:
— Browse scroll through a library of dive clips and videos.
— Record create/record spatial and temporal dive clips.
— Render render dive clips into stand alone videos, playable anywhere even without the Diver app.
— Remix stitch together multiple dive clips.
— Share share dive clips in any web browser or on social media.
• Download Diver
The Diver app is currently available for iPad & iPhone at the App Store:
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/sudiver/id1294150341
Detailed instructions are at Diver's "How To" pages: http://app.diver-cloud.net/howto/
— After downloading the app browse anonymously, or sign up (with the Product Hunt code: PH001) to upload your own videos and create new Dive clips.
The Diver app is a proof-of-concept MVP, we're inviting the Product Hunt community to be our first non-academic beta users. Hence a few caveats, including:
– the iPad version of the app is currently more full-featured than on the iPhone (e.g. the option to upload your own video is available only on the iPad, etc.).
– only academic & research users are able to directly access & dive on YouTube videos***; all other users can upload their own videos or dive on any video already in the app.
– when uploading your own videos landscape orientation is preferred; portrait video is not yet fully supported and will be scaled & stretched to fit.
• Research Diver vs. the Diver app
Diver was originally conceived and implemented as a tool for studying, analyzing, and sharing commentary on classroom videos. In this most recent incarnation we're introducing the concept to a broader audience, i.e. any user that wants to share their perspective with short video clips.
Examples include:
— News video commentary; e.g. police breaking up a June '20 Los Angeles county protest
— Sports video analysis; e.g. the legendary Lee Trevino's golf swing
— Replying to a tweet & diving deeper into a video post, e.g. is Kanye's iPhone passcode really "0000"?
‥ Or any short video clip you want to share; see our Diver Instagram account for more examples.
• Partnering opportunities
Our goal is to transition the Diver technology from university project to commercial product.
If you're a film / TV studio, a news agency, or any media company with a library of videos that you'd like to open up to user-generated-content, i.e. allowing your audience to sub-clip, remix and share portions of those videos then we look forward to meeting with you.

Any and all questions, comments, and feedback are greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
