Dokyu started out as a little side project for me to indulge my love of documentaries. Dokyu translates from Japanese to ‘document’. Although, it has to be said that I don’t speak Japanese and this translation may not be compatible with the context of a documentary. The name was short and catchy, though. And I also like Japanese culture, so...
Anyway, so I’ve worked on this since the beginning of February, 2018. It’s an extension for Adobe After Effects. I Invested time building upon my hacked-together knowledge of HTML/CSS with some Javascript and Adobe’s Extendscript. I attribute progress to many of the free JS courses on YouTube, Adobe and Creative Cow forums, as well as Davide Barranca (@undavide) in particular. (Author of the essential HTML panels book for anyone else considering their own extension for an Adobe product.) Last but absolutely not least, a shout-out to the folks at @pixabay, and their API that provides free access to some 1.2 million photos and videos.
I plan to use this tool to help me produce hobbyist documentaries going forward and hope that it might support me so I might find a little more time for these projects. During development, I realised the use-cases might be somewhat broader, so focused on education, entertainment and promotion as areas Dokyu can produce video content for. Hopefully, the tool is as useful for others as it is for me.

Ok, quick update. Giving away 10 licenses in exchange for feedback if anyone is gracious enough to offer up a little of their time. Of course, this only applies to people who use After Effects. It requires 2018+, so probably an active CC subscription.

A note on CC2019 which was just released: Dokyu works with the legacy expression engine just fine; working on the update right now. Dokyu will be up to 5x faster now that they’re phasing out Extendscript for expressions.
