I got a $420 Google Workspace bill for five people. Two of them barely used email, and one was a shared address that existed so a form on a website had somewhere to post. I was paying full seat price for a database row with an MX record pointed at it. So I went and ran my own mail server for a while. That taught me the thing I actually needed to know, which is that the software isn't the hard part. Stalwart is excellent, you can have IMAP and DKIM running on a $6 VPS in an afternoon. The hard part is the Tuesday nine months later when a provider quietly starts deferring your mail and you spend two evenings in SMTP logs working out why. It isn't a problem you solve once, it's upkeep you pay every week forever, and the failure mode is that mail silently stops arriving somewhere and nobody tells you. The pricing came out of the same annoyance. A mail server doesn't care how many people are on it, it cares about bytes stored and bytes moved. Everyone bills the human and pays for the gigabyte, which is why adding careers@ or invoices@ costs you money it shouldn't. So this charges for storage and gives the headcount away. $9 a year, unlimited mailboxes and domains, 10 GB pooled, $0.40/GB after that. Where it really is today: 12 people paying, 44 domains, 61 mailboxes. Small, and I'd rather say the number than imply a bigger one. What it deliberately won't do: no bulk or marketing sending (not a roadmap gap, I don't want that traffic anywhere near customer mail), no calendar or drive, no free tier, no lifetime deals. And if your actual problem is one 200 GB archive, storage is metered, so this isn't the cheapest place for you. Better you hear it here than at renewal. Happy to take the awkward questions.
