Nvidia to buy AI chip startup Groq’s assets for about $20 billion in largest deal on record

Merry Christmas Jonathan Ross (Groq s Founder)! $20B will buy a lot of holiday cheer!

Today, Groq announced that it has entered into a non-exclusive licensing agreement with Nvidia for Groq s inference technology. The agreement reflects a shared focus on expanding access to high-performance, low cost inference.

As part of this agreement, Jonathan Ross, Groq s Founder, Sunny Madra, Groq s President, and other members of the Groq team will join Nvidia to help advance and scale the licensed technology.

Groq will continue to operate as an independent company with Simon Edwards stepping into the role of Chief Executive Officer.

GroqCloud will continue to operate without interruption.

The speed is the whole point. Replies come back almost instantly, even on the larger open models, so I never sit there watching it type. I use it for quick code fixes and rewriting text, and the fast back and forth changes how often I reach for it. Free to try, no setup, and being able to switch models is a nice bonus.

What needs improvement

A few things. Saved chat history and longer context would help a lot. The model list shifts and it is not always clear which one to pick, so a one line note on each would go a long way. And public API access at the same speed, so I can build with it and not just chat in the window.

I was already using ChatGPT and Claude for the same jobs. They are still better for long, involved reasoning, but for short questions they feel slow next to this now. I came to Groq for the speed and stayed because the open models handle most of my daily tasks fine, without me paying per message to find out.

Groq is one of the best value proposition out there. It handles well model with large context windows, which is very important for coding. Alternative that provide fast inference need to step up on the particular point.
