As the name suggests, it is all about groups. First, you create a group, then you create events that are shared with members. One of the core tenets of GRUP is simplicity. There are many calendar apps out there: we wanted a simpler, straightforward tool.

GRUP has its roots "home-cooked app" (https://www.robinsloan.com/notes...) - a friend had an apparently simple problem to solve: in their co-living community, tracking who was attending lunch was a nightmare! They used pen and paper, but attendees could range from 10 to 50 at times. Somebody would always be travelling and had to delegate to someone else to track their attendance. Some people brought guests and they had to count them last-minute to ensure there'd be food for everyone.
Initially, I tried to point them to a shared Google Sheets, or alternatively a shared Calendar. Both options were kind of clunky though. How would you handle invites? Who would create the different events? Who was authorised to add more guests?
The concept was right, and a properly managed calendar MAY have worked. But the user experience was not nearly there.
So I built something specifically for them, initially a simple web app with Firebase, after they used it for some time they started bringing ideas on other scenarios where it could be useful; but it wasn't even designed to handle more than 1 set of members.
And from there, GRUP was born: with some friends we decided to revamp it, redesign it, and make it open source for many other communities out there to enjoy it!
