I hadn't really doodled since Draw Something. I've been throwing myself at app development, but I still wanted to scratch that particular itch, and I kept thinking about what AI could do for creativity if it wasn't the thing making the picture. So I put it on the other side of the paper. izzit gives you one word a day. You draw it, and a vision model tries to figure out what you made. You get three tries. I originally used a small, cheap model because I needed the cost of each day to be basically nothing. It turned out that was also more fun. It gets things wrong. Sometimes very wrong. Arguing with the machine is half the game. If it gets your drawing, it becomes a card in your sketchbook. First try is Gold, second is Silver, third is Bronze, and every card keeps what the AI thought it was seeing along the way. About one in five correct drawings comes back shiny for being more interesting than it needed to be — and a shiny first try is a Diamond, which is the one I still chase. If you stump it completely you get a Mystery card, which is often the better story. It's free to try, and $0.99 unlocks submitting for good. There are packs for fantasy, sci-fi and supers if the standard words aren't your jam, but the thing I'm actually trying to make is very small: one excuse to draw something every day, for maybe two minutes. I'd like to know whether the AI being wrong feels funny or frustrating, and whether the cards make you want to come back tomorrow.

What really makes this app for me is sharing your drawings with friends! I enjoy that part. Izzit encourages me to be a little goofy. The AI works well, and I am not a big supporter of AI in art -- but this is more like, "Can I explain to a third party that this is actually a creature, and not just line doodles?" Do you remember showing your drawings at school or home to your Mom, and her smiling encouragingly, but only getting what you drew because you told her? This is the next step up. Call it "Your Dad."

Give it a try, but use the fantasy pack*, because I only became interested when I got to draw dragon kings, Cthulhu, trolls, and wargs.* Orcs, goblins, Fenris, the world serpent, Phoenixes...Other creatures of magical families. One time, the AI threw up a prompt for "samurai," but it must have cribbed that from an old D&D Eastern manual.) **Wargs are the giant wolves that orcs ride in "Lord Of the Rings."

Hey this is super fun! One thing, I wish it worked properly on web mobile. When I try to draw the page scrolls. If it were as easy as Wordle on a phone browser I’d legit come back to play this over and over.

@projord Thanks! Interesting—I hadn't considered actually trying to make the web experience good; that surface was really more of a gimmick for the full-featured thing.

I should be able to whip that up, though I'd have to poke at how well I could link the apple/play accounts.

best worst drawing?

There's a lot of different ways to play izzit. Sometimes I see how small and quick a sketch I can do sometimes I try to be inventive with the subject matter and sometimes I can't help but pun especially when the pun seems like it might be a challenge to pull off.

CROWBAR: I drew a crow bar. A dive bar for crows. It got that, but it didn't get the connection to crowbar. I tried drawing a crowbar as a logo for the bar, I tried framing it, but I couldn't get it past the AI.
