Hey, it’s Hans here from Team Lobby. We’ve been working on a “passive” social app, and we’d love to hear your thoughts! With GenZ’s growing antipathy towards traditional social media, as well as the professional workforce remaining hybrid, people need AUTHENTIC connections now more than ever. However, reaching out for no reason is cringe (remember those “what’s up” messages or “streak” snaps?), which is why you lose touch with most friends you know. Lobby’s mission has always been about helping friends stay in touch, and now we are taking it to the extreme and thoroughly fulfilling our mission. Lobby is an app that calls you and your friends: 1. Get a video call every night 2. You don’t know who it is until you pick up (could be your BFF, your high school friend, your raver buddy, your crush, your teammate...) 3. The catch-up call ends in one minute. Think of it as a BeReal but for video chat, or a Monkey/ Chatroulette but among friends. We believe that IRL interactions are spontaneous PRECISELY because they are passive (you just run into them). We hope Lobby can unleash all those convos that could have happened but didn’t. Just 1 serendipitous chat a day, for you, me, and everyone around us.

Very cool concept @hanslin98, congrats on your launch today 👏🚀 I'm curious what the time frame is for a call "every night". How do you factor in time zone differences for people in different areas? A bit tougher to find a perfect time when most people are available for a quick (live) chat, vs BeReal that only asks for a quick photo. Best of luck as you continue to grow your product 🤝

@hugh_lagrotteria Thank you for your support Hugh! And great questions. 🙌 We've broken the different time zones into a few REGIONS. Some adjacent time zones were rounded up to fit within larger and unified time zones (regions). We do that to maximise the chances of successful calls for people from different places, with minimum interruptions caused by the time differences. Right now the roulette call window is 7 pm to 8.30 pm for each REGION to avoid working/sleeping hours. There's also an option in-app where you can switch on weekly catch-up calls with friends or groups (this is optional). It's kinda like how you have close friends on Instagram, except on Lobby you catch up with selected friends on a random day of the week. Feel free to give it a try if you're interested, and please don't hesitate to let us know anytime if you have any thoughts/feedback about our product. Your input will be very helpful!

One minute every day so that people know what to expect: it's just 1 minute, it's short hence low commitment; it's gonna be with a random friend of yours, so even if you missed it, it's not that big a deal because you know there will be another one the next day. The one-minute call is just a call to action, you’re more than welcome to hang around longer if you want :). I've found myself and friends hopping on another call in-app after we had just had a one-minute call.

Really love this & the recent trend of social apps focusing on a 'purist' approach, helping people connect rather than widening the gap between friends. One of the best social startups I've seen in a while. Great job @hanslin98 and the team.

It's so easy to lose touch with friends and people that were close to us nowadays(friends from college, ex-coworkers, or family members if you live abroad). It's time for products that are actually about creating connections rather than curation.
