Hey, Product Hunt! 👋
Ever feel like your brain is running an outdated operating system? Midlife Engineering is here to help — no software updates required.
🔊 What is it?
A playful, sound therapy tool that lets you craft ambient soundscapes to relieve stress, sharpen focus, and spark creativity. Think of it as yoga for your ears, minus the awkward stretching.
💡 Why try it?
- De-stress instantly – Ambient sounds lower cortisol, reducing anxiety and promoting relaxation.
- Sharpen your mind – Creating soundscapes enhances neuroplasticity, keeping your brain adaptable and engaged.
- Enter a flow state – Rhythmic audio patterns improve dopamine regulation, making focus easier.
- Sleep better – Low-frequency sounds slow brainwaves, helping you fall asleep faster.
✨ Backed by science
Studies show that ambient soundscapes improve cognitive function, reduce sensory overload, and enhance focus, especially for neurodivergent individuals. Whether you’re managing ADHD, anxiety, depression or just need to drown out distractions, sound therapy can work wonders.
Midlife (or any life) crisis? Try Midlife Engineering. It’s like therapy without the talking — and way cheaper than a motorcycle. 🚀
Best viewed on Desktop and with headphones.
We’d love your feedback! Let us know not just what you think, but how it makes you feel (the most important part) afterwards. This helps me make it even better.
@mrblackstudio sounds amazing. Makes me really happy to see how much effort and solutions are emerging to help us with anxiety and depression; reasons to be tech-optimist. Congrats on the launch and best of luck distributing this! 🫡

@mrblackstudio
It's a terrific story you told with the site alone; resonates with me every scroll of the way.
A display of creativity with a proven utility case -- restoring one's self. One of the few gems out on the internet.

@ari_nakos Amazing you got the story part. It should feel fun, have humour and yes be relatable to the stresses we all share today — there's a reason why all time poor mental health rates are sky rocketing and we as creatives need to fight against a system that is both causing it and doing very little to combat it.
Appreciate your feedback. Peace :)
@edicook Great to hear Edie — being useful is already a great achievement. I hope it makes you feel good too.
It's things like this get me excited about the internet. I'm an audiophile. I like good design. I like when something takes me through a journey. This hits every.single.thing. I've had the noise playing in the background for an hour and played with the synth as my break time (so new sounds), then go back into focus mode.
Really well done @mrblackstudio - my ears, eyes, and soul thank you.

@joshua_mitcham thanks Joshua — it’s not a physical product for sale by me. It is a digital product for using on the web.
The synth design is based on Teenage Engineering’s OP—XY. You can check them out on the web. They make amazing products.

@evakk First and foremost it's a tool I created for my own issues with sleep and anxiety. It's also scientifically proven to help. I hope you find your vibe and it helps. Report back on your findings — this is the interesting part where I hope to help individuals such as yourself through the power of ambient music. Peace :)

@bradon_h Hey Brandon, thanks for your feedback. The science is somewhat a grey area. There is a lot of studies, but because it's seen as alternative therapy and no money can be made, the studies aren't so large. But, what I do know that if I listen to thrash metal, or techno vs calming drones and sound of nature, the feelings, mood and state of relaxation differs greatly. Complete polar opposites.

Hey Product Hunt 👋
Back in February we somehow landed 4th place here, which was both flattering and mildly confusing. Since then, Midlife Engineering has quietly grown up a bit. Less frantic energy. Fewer buttons shouting for attention. Same goal: help your brain calm down without asking it to explain itself.
What’s new in v2?
Midlife Engineering now scrolls more smoothly (your trackpad will thank you), adds proper sound encoders for shaping the audio in real time, and introduces a small device-style screen that gently guides you rather than yelling instructions.
There’s also a rebuilt custom visualiser with four modes, each running multiple random scenes that react directly to the sound frequencies. No loops. No repeats. Just something quietly alive in the background.
And finally, Autoplay. Switch it on and it does the thinking for you. Random samples, loops, slow crossfades, subtle parameter changes over time. Like an ambient radio station that never announces the track and never asks if you’re “still listening”.
Same idea, better balance
It’s still about easing stress, finding focus, and giving overstimulated brains somewhere safe to land. Just with fewer decisions and a bit more trust in the machine to handle things for a while.
If you enjoyed the original release, thank you, genuinely.
And if you’re curious where it’s gone since, I’d love you to give v2 a look.
Also, I’ve just submitted Midlife Engineering for Framer’s Best Interaction Design Award 2025. If it’s helped you in any way and you fancy throwing a vote or a like its direction over on Framer, that would mean a lot.

Best experienced on desktop, with headphones, and a vague intention to relax.
Feedback always welcome — especially the “I didn’t realise how tense I was” kind.
Cheers ❤️

You're welcome!
This is a perfect use case, and it makes me so happy that it can potentially help you with your ADHD — as a fellow with this super power — I know how much tools like this benefits us. to help calm and slow down our overactive minds and nervous system.
An app would be great — currently there's no plans for this at the moment but I'm working on a record and download feature that enables you to sample your own soundscapes and listen offline.
Thanks for your amazing feedback 🙏
