We use OpenStreetMap as the mapping foundation for RiiS, a citizen journalism app where first-hand reports are organized geographically. Its worldwide coverage and open, community-driven model are especially valuable for a platform designed to show events from many different regions, including places that may receive limited media coverage. It has given us the flexibility to build an interactive map without depending on a closed mapping ecosystem.

What needs improvement

Map detail and consistency can vary between regions, especially in areas with fewer local contributors. Better consistency in less-covered locations and clearer guidance for developers using different map layers would make the experience even stronger.

vs Alternatives

We considered Google Maps, but chose OpenStreetMap because its open data model, global coverage and flexibility were a better fit for RiiS. We wanted more control over how reports are displayed geographically and preferred a mapping solution that supports an open and internationally focused product.
