Doomscrolling is free. Orbit makes it cost something. Pick a schedule and your apps lock themselves. Want back in early? Earn it: hold the orb, do squats, ask a friend, pay a little more each time, or win a shift at The Gate. Most times, you’ll stay out.

I am sad to admit that I do need this product to help me overcome my scrolling habit. I think the way the app works is quite unique and intuitive. When you say that I have to pay to do something, I would rather stick to what I am supposed to do. I think this is a great way to make me more serious about leaving this habit behind. However, sometimes I just go with the flow, so even if I agree to text someone and close the app, my muscle memory might still lead me to start scrolling. How would this be detected, and how would such a situation be handled?
@deokumar_manwar Nothing sad about it, honestly. My own Screen Time said 10h 19m a day before we built this, so you're in good company. 🙂 And the science backs your instinct. Infinite feeds remove the natural stopping cues, which is why your thumb keeps going on autopilot. It's not a willpower problem. So Orbit doesn't try to catch the drift in the moment; it decides for you ahead of time. "Reply to someone" opens only that one app for 2 minutes, then it locks again by itself, whether you're mid-reply or three reels deep. That's a pre-commitment, and it's one of the best-supported tools out there: in a 12-week study, people underestimated how much they'd scroll, and putting money on the line cut social media use by 39%, with the habit change lasting after the money stopped. That's why it works so well on you. 😄 Want back in after the 2 minutes? You go through the bouncer and earn it again, and with "Harder each attempt" every unlock that week costs a little more.
Hey folks! I’m one of the makers of Orbit 👋
We built Orbit because we kept picking up our phones for “just a minute” and staying much longer than we intended.
Instead of another reminder to stop scrolling, Orbit asks you to do something before opening a distracting app: do squats, ask a friend to unlock it, or beat a mini-game.
The goal isn’t to never use your phone. It’s to make opening an app a choice rather than a reflex.
Would love to hear what you think. Which app would you put behind an Orbit challenge first?
@noyanidin
Uff, just out of curiosity – what were ou doing 10h 19 min on your phone? :D
@busmark_w_nika LOL! Mostly social media 😅 but before judging, I need to say that I'm a marketer, so I spend a lot of time on different accounts, trying to catch trends 🤓
@alara_akcasiz aaa, okay, everything is forgiven :D
@noyanidin @oistenhickorkmaz @alara_akcasiz The clever bit is making the escape hatch harder to reach than the feed. Love that design choice.
@noyanidin @oistenhickorkmaz @harshyadav That's exactly it, thank you! 🙌 Most blockers make the way out one tap away, so the feed always wins the moment you're tired. We flipped it: the feed takes a tap, getting back to it takes squats, a friend, or a shift at The Gate. There's research behind it too: in one study, even a short forced pause before opening an app made people give up on 36% of attempts. I insist on downloading & trying 👀
This is a cool. I knew a friend of mine actually built toys for kids to earn screen time by actually doing house chores. Similar ideas. bet they work really well. congrats!
@w_fan Thank you! 🙌 That's such a lovely idea, and honestly the same instinct: screen time feels different when you've earned it. Kids get it right away; it turns out adults need the same deal. 😄 Did your friend's toys work better as a reward, or as a "chores first" rule?
When on Android btw ?
The limit of three Gate shifts a day is a smart way to keep the game from turning into another feed. Did most early users end up picking squats or the friend approval?
@neerajnathany Thank you for the question 🙌 So far the two that get people most excited are the night shift game and friend approval. The game because it's genuinely fun and still makes you say "no" to others most nights, and friend approval because asking a real person turns "just 5 minutes" into something you have to say out loud; we have a lot of couples ✨. Which one would you pick for yourself?
@alara_akcasiz night shift game for me, feels like the most fun way to earn it and the 3 a day cap keeps it from getting out of hand
