Payscale helps employees in finance take back their negotiating power by showing them what they should be paid, based off of up-to-date, comprehensive market data.
Hey all! I created Payscale because I used to work within finance, and while there were definitely a lot of interesting aspects to the work, I feel like there was a huge lack of transparency with compensation and career progression, especially when it came to promotions and pay higher up the ladder. Compensation is a huge part of most people's career decisions (especially in finance where people are known to work grueling hours), and comp structure should really be more transparent to everyone. There are websites (WSO, glassdoor) that have pay information but a lot of information is missing and I feel like it's more valuable to see individual data points vs. aggregate numbers.
After transitioning to tech, the transparency in pay (not only in entry offers but also in progression/exit ops) is so much more transparent and i feel like that's part of the reason why salaries are so much higher across the board. Employees that have more information have higher negotiating power with employers, and can also start to look at issues like pay equality between genders or racial groups. I'm a woman, and my friends who are women and still in finance often feel like they're getting underpaid vs. their male counterparts (but salary is a taboo topic and it's hard to compare definitively).
I've created this tool to help finance professionals better understand total compensation, to be able to negotiate better salaries, and also to understand how to break in to different careers within finance. Please share if you find this tool helpful and want to see more pay transparency within finance!
