@staringispolite just getting back to this.. apologies! Unfortunately, you can't use third party Spotify iOS apps like POW WOW with the free ad supported experience. They require you to have Premium to use their API. So, unfortunately, one person will need a premium account in your group.
As for how it differs from the collaborative lists on Spotify, POW WOW is built for real-time collaboration while the Spotify collaborative playlists are more asynchronous. Therefore, they are great for building playlists overtime but the experience is not the same when you're trying to build something in real-time with your friends. POW WOW prioritizes the songs that your friends add to make sure you get to hear them. When using the Spotify collaborative tool, a song that's added would appear at the bottom of the list and potentially wouldn't be heard for hours. Therefore, it may not even get played while you're at the event.
Basically, we tried to make POW WOW compliment the social experience with friends in the most natural way possible.
