Motion Editor is an open-source, AI-native alternative to Adobe After Effects. Unlike closed-source motion tools, it gives creators and developers the freedom to customize, extend, and build on the platform. It combines timeline-based editing, 2D/3D motion design, and integrated AI assistance to create a modern, community-driven motion graphics experience.
an open-source alternative to after effects for motion graphics is a real gap, most of the free options are either too basic or stuck on old codebases. the AI-editable keyframes idea is the part that stood out to me since most render pipelines flatten everything to pixels once it's baked
What needs improvement
windows is covered but mac is still coming, so it's not usable for everyone yet. also the product is called both premation and motion editor in different places, worth picking one name so people searching for it later don't think they're two different tools
vs Alternatives
looked at a couple of the paid motion tools before this, mainly for the export flexibility, but the licensing cost for something used occasionally never made sense for me. an open source option that's actually maintained is worth the rougher edges
Thanks so much for the thoughtful review! We really appreciate you taking the time to try Premation.
We're glad the AI-editable keyframes stood out—that's one of the core ideas we're excited about.
You're absolutely right about the branding inconsistency. We'll make sure to consistently use Premation as the product name and AI Motion Editor as the description across Product Hunt, GitHub, and our website.
As for macOS support, it's already on our roadmap and we're actively working toward bringing Premation to more platforms.
Thanks again for the valuable feedback and support!
