We built Prose as an alternative to Microsoft Word. Word is a good tool, and it keeps getting better, but it is generic and a lot of time lawyers are doing "Word Processing" activities. We thought it would be better to make something that understood what the common elements of a contract were, how they worked, what they meant, and how they were used.
Prose is essentially "an IDE for drafting contracts" - we took a concept from the software world (the Integrated Drafting Environment) and built one for drafting contracts. It has all the tools and features that one would need to draft contracts. Importantly it completely removes the word processing tasks which currently keep lawyers chained to their desks.
