This is actually rather absurd and, sadly (no pun intended), a sign of the times. Bad things happen in the world and, without mentioning the idea of doing something about it, the response is to set up an alternate reality where it doesn't exist. 🙄
@andym_dc you are right, but I suppose it's a good idea to get away from it sometimes.. for your own psychological well-being. ;) In social media you get overwhelmed with bad news.

@andym_dc I completely agree. This is just further fuels your own social media bubble
@andym_dc Hey there! This is the biggest argument folks make against the tool. I don't agree that it's that absurd. This won't block everything bad from happening in your life, it is simply meant to give some relief from what, for some people, has turned into a constant barrage of negativity while browsing.
I've tried to outline some of my thoughts here: https://tomthought.github.io/web...
Thanks for the comment!
@andym_dc a very valid point its a neat tool yet probably the first tool on PH i secretly wish it doesn't reach mass adoption for exactly that.
However reading the Maker's blog post, a sentence alerted me "going to bed depressed .." to the fact that apathy probably comes in all sizes & variances, and this tool is probably crucially needed to people whom the mass & sheer magintude of the news troubles them on a level i may never experience.

@marcograf@tomthought@marcograf I don't disagree with the counterpoints here and certainly feel for folks who may be predisposed to anxiety and the like. Perhaps my comment was a little broad inasmuch as it did not take those folks into account. However, as evidenced by a commenter below who said "does it turn off politics?", a large chunk of the user base of any tool like this is going to be non-oppressed people like me (ie, straight white dude) who have the privilege of turning off certain ugly aspects of the world. Keeping our eyes wide open to these events (staying 'woke,' if you will) isn't going to solve every problem, but it will go much further in ridding the world of all the "sad" news than simply blocking the medium with which that news can reach us ever will. Hi! Very good extension! I've just tried it. But I'm interested about how it works. It is an extension that delete articles based on keywords? Or an AI that detect titles that are depressing (sentiment analysis) and understand the topic of the article ? BTW it's really good for my English newsfeed. But do you intend to add new languages such as French (because I'm French and unfortunately the French depressing, politic articles are still there :D ).
@thomassimonini Hi there! I'm using primitive sentiment analysis in your browser. No AI magic here. It seems to work well enough, but if it becomes popular enough I'd love to add a better algorithm, support for more languages, etc.
@sridhar_kondoji Of course :) You can toggle on/off the various keyword packs and sad blocking logic with the click of a button.

I can see this working for news posts but for social posts from your friends? People like to share their best moments on social media pretending every aspect of their life is dandy.

This is an interesting app. On the one hand I can see it enabling people who are already removed from oppression in many forms to further dissociate from it, but on the other hand I can see it being helpful for people who struggle with anxiety and depression and need occasional breaks from the darkness to cope. Definitely something worthy of further convo. Might host one on my anchor channel and ask my community what they think.
@tese_omesan I agree, this tool would be great for people who struggle with anxiety and depression issues. Often the topics that this tool filters can be triggers for these people, so having something like this would be great.
Feel like I'm against the idea. Don't get me wrong, it's landed well - but we shouldn't turn a blind eye to the tragedy in life. It's turning into a trademark of the social media generation. Some parts of life are ugly. They make you appreciate what you have and compel you to make change elsewhere.
@goos3d_ie Hi! This is the #1 argument most folks make when confronted with this tool. I understand the viewpoint, but I would also like to suggest that the world does not operate in binary mode. I've tried to outline some of my thoughts on the idea here: https://tomthought.github.io/web...
