Ever double click a CSV or XLSX file on your mac and have to wait 30 seconds while Numbers loads? And when it loads it's filled with a ton of crap you don't need? Then I wrote this for you (well mostly me, but you might find it cool too). A small, fast spreadsheet for the Mac, written entirely in Swift. Free and MIT open source with XLSX as the native file format. 156 functions, incremental recalc, Excel-style keyboard editing.

Hi Everyone,
I wanted a spreadsheet on my Mac that opens fast, edits an .xlsx file and saves it back, and does nothing else. Numbers converts everything into its own format. Excel is a subscription and a big install for opening a CSV. Google Sheets wants a browser and an account.
So I built SimpleSpread. It is a native Mac app, written entirely in Swift, and the whole spreadsheet stack is from scratch: the model, the formula engine, the XLSX reader and writer (down to the ZIP layer), CSV and the grid. The only outside library is Sparkle, for updates.
• XLSX is the native format. Open a file from Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets, edit it, save it, send it back. Styles, number formats, formulas with cached values, merged ranges and frozen panes all survive the round trip.
• CSV done properly: delimiter sniffing, BOM and CP1252 detection, leading zeros kept, and a field like =cmd imports as text, never as a formula.
• 156 functions with the coercion rules Sheets and Excel share: SUMIFS with wildcards, XLOOKUP, INDEX/MATCH, IRR/XIRR, dates and text. Incremental recalc and cycle detection.
• It edits like Excel: Enter/Edit modes, type to replace, F2, ⌘-arrow jumps, fill handle, ⌘D / ⌘R, real undo, Find, zoom.
• Notarized, and it updates itself in place.
Upfront about what it is not: no charts, no pivot tables, no conditional formatting, no array formulas, no INDIRECT/OFFSET yet, and no collaboration. Frozen panes and merged cells are kept in the file but not drawn yet. It is Apple Silicon only, macOS 14 or later, and en-US number and date input for now.
It's free, MIT licensed and on GitHub, so read it, fork it, send patches. I'd love to hear which missing feature stops you using it day to day. Find & Replace and Paste Values are next on my list.
