@nbashaw - We thought about unique usernames, but we wanted to keep things short and sweet. 6 characters can be grouped (ABC - 123) and should be easy to memorize. Short means less to type to exchange information. Second, always 6 characters keeps it consistent when sharing with others, much like when you share your phone number, if you only get say 6 numbers, you know it's missing one.
And yes, I totally agree with you about network density and we think Detroit is a great launch pad for a product like this.

@Tosswill - We don't require participation in any specific existing social media. Social Media is an optional piece that users can choose to share.
With our platform you aren't adding a specific user, instead you are adding a specific card. That is why we share 6 character, Spincodes, as opposed to a username. Eventually you will have the ability to manage multiple cards. Say you work for two different companies, each of our cards have specific codes allowing you to share them separately as you see fit.
We definitely understand the need for having the exchange to happen without physical devices on hand. We choose 6 character codes because they're short and rather easy to memorize. So, if my phone died, you can still share your Spincode with me physically, write it down on anywhere. I can always look it up at a later time. If neither of us have our phone, we can still share our Spincodes. One of our design goals was to specifically not require two devices to be physically present to exchange contact information.
We're currently building a feature that will allow you to see who has added you. So in the instance I share a code with you without my phone, I'll be able to add you back once I get to my device.
